Trainer’s tip: ‘Kickstart your day with a cold shower’

B-One trainers love sharing knowledge and expertise with clients – it is educational and beneficial. Hence, the ‘Trainer’s Tip’ series was born. Today: Bart ter Huurne (26).

A cold shower—just the thought sends shivers down your spine. Let’s be honest: icy water cascading over your body isn’t exactly a joyride. Yet, I start every day with this routine because it gives my day a kickstart. I recommend it to everyone.

Fit & focused

A cold shower jolts you awake, making you start the day fit and focused. An added bonus: I don’t need coffee for the first hour and a half of a day. A fantastic way for a coffee lover like me to limit my caffeine intake.

Moreover, stepping out of the shower feels like a small victory; you’ve conquered the cold again. It provides a good feeling, boosts your willpower, and enhances your perseverance.

More benefits of cold showers

There are several benefits to cold showers, such as:

  • Beneficial for your immune system: That icy stream prompts your blood cells to tackle infections. A study in the Netherlands found that people who cold showered for 30, 60, or 90 seconds for 90 days stayed sick 29% less often than those who didn’t.
  • A happier mood: According to a 2007 study, exposure to cold water is linked to a boost in neurotransmitters like noradrenaline and endorphins. In simple terms, this might reduce the development of depressive symptoms.

In short, trying a cold morning shower is worth it. Start with 30 seconds of cold at the end, and gradually increase. Or make your shower slightly colder every day. Before you know it, you won’t want to go without it.
